Periodontitis

Facts

Periodontal disease (periodontitis / parodontose) is a chronic disease that can not be cured. Treatment with tartar removal and surgery is to relieve the symptoms and halt the process as much as possible. The exact cause of the disease that affects c. 10-15% of the adult population is not yet known. However, recognized that the oral cavity bacteria that form plaque and tartar is a necessity for the disease to develop. The emphasis of treatment is therefore on the one hand, preventing the formation through a good oral hygiene, especially between the teeth and trying to restore and maintain healthy gums since the disease is detected.

This is done by an interaction between treatment with a specialist to create as healthy as possible starting points and hygienist for regular maintenance to clean tooth surfaces as possible. One very important for the long-term results have the patient's own ability to keep root surfaces clean by daily oral hygiene. Most patients suffering from periodontal disease are well motivated to do this but it requires commitment and ability to prioritize. It is especially defects in oral hygiene between the teeth that are common in most people. By misleading advertising for great new toothbrushes and toothpastes think most of us that this is sufficient for an adequate oral hygiene, advertising for example, dental floss or bottle-brush look, however, never. The reason for this is safe to clean between the teeth is difficult and less "sexy" than brushing. Nonetheless: not to clean between the teeth is like never wash under the arms - BASTA!

A rough estimate is that less than 10% of the population use floss or interdental brushes (bottle brushes), etc. on a regular basis, ie. at least every other day. As periodontal disease patient, you are unfortunately forced to do this if the treatment results should stand the test.

Another problem with periodontal disease is that most patients come to specialized treatment when symptoms of the disease is already well established, ie. gum pockets become deeper (> 5mm) and teeth may begin to feel loose, or suddenly had to be removed. It is therefore not certain that a referral to a specialist can save all teeth why reading can be a combination of saving, it is treatable and even plan for the rehabilitation of the areas where the teeth are lost. Furthermore, there may be other causes of tooth loss or periodontal pockets caused by such technically inadequate root canals or rotfrakturer and then the assessment of another. As smokers are also purely statistically higher risk of disease progression accelerated. However, there are weightier health reasons to stop smoking even if periodontal disease is as good as any. A patient who continues to smoke can always expect a poorer prognosis for treatment.
